October 2016 CSA Wrap-Up

Our fall CSA was, yet again, gorgeous and plentiful. As the weather gets cooler, I love seeing the variety of vegetables change, yet the amount is amazing. The farm does an awesome job of offering lots of variety for it’s members.

Well, this concludes another amazing CSA season. I will admit that while the veggies were delicious and beautiful from our new CSA location, but we missed our former CSA, Wilson Farm in Lexington, tremendously! There are many things I missed: the convenience of the full market right there, the already put together basket which made for easy pick-up, and the friendly smiles from all of the staff each week. We will see what next year brings and what CSA we will choose. Stay tuned!

July 2016 CSA Wrap-Up

Hey friends! Happy summer!! We had another great CSA month this July! Lots of zucchini, summer squash, scallions and onions this month. We also got our share of pickling cucumbers, which are a big hit around here, especially paired with hummus. Yum!

Recipes this month:

Salads: We had lots of salads this month, just like June. With the combination of swiss chard, green leaf and red leaf lettuce, you are bound to have a delicious salad every time!

Grilled Summer Squash: We also had our share of grilled zucchini and summer squash. Such a simple way to eat squash during grilling season: slice, grill, and sprinkle with a little extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

Smoothies: Summer in New England always calls for smoothies! We always have on hand fresh greens, fresh or frozen berries, avocado and coconut milk to some yummy delicious-ness. Everyone here loves them!

Homemade Strawberry Banana “Ice Cream”

We had a whole bunch of bananas that got too ripe too fast this month so I cut them up and froze them on parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Then I transferred them to a ziploc bag for later use. I took out the strawberry + coconut milk cubes that I froze from our strawberry picking in June, combined it with frozen banana and a splash of almond milk in the Vitamix, and it made the most delicious strawberry banana frozen treat!

June 2016 CSA Wrap-Up

We had a great start to the CSA season filled with lots of lettuces, beets and sugar snap peas, among many other beautiful vegetables. Swiss chard has got to be my all time favorite. During CSA season I eat it at almost every meal! No joke!

This year we are trying a new farm since we moved, so it’s been a little different routine and a little farther than we’re used to, but the vegetables are all awesome and plentiful.

The first week in June we picked up my cousin’s CSA share for him, so we got a little sneak preview of the upcoming awesome-ness in our own share: mixed greens, swiss chard, radishes, white radishes, spring onions, dill, broccoli and spinach.

June is also a fabulous month for strawberry picking and all the strawberries, yum! We took a little adventure to Sunshine Farm in Sherborn, MA and picked a whole bunch of strawberries. We had strawberries for days!! I made a variety of smoothies, strawberry lemonade gummies, and strawberry + coconut milk pops. They were gone too fast to make strawberry shortcake with coconut whipped cream – that was next on the list.

July 2015 CSA Wrap-Up

Hi everyone! Another awesome month of our CSA. Who can deny the awesome-ness of getting fresh, local veggies, fruit and fish every week in your house? No one! This month we enjoyed a lot of beets, scallions, onions, corn, zucchini and lettuces.

Week 5: beets, red leaf lettuce, Tuscan kale, wax beans, baby arugula, salad onions, blueberries

Week 6: swiss chard (in love), Boston lettuce (my new favorite), cucumber, zucchini squash, daikon, beets, red onions, corn, NJ tomato

Fish: swordfish

Recipes: Daikon + beet salad – this was surprisingly delicious and so easy. I am not a beet person, unfortunately. I have tried my best to make them in a variety of ways but I just don’t love them. I made beet chips last summer and those were delicious, but just okay. I will keep trying though.

I think this salad might be a winner. I peeled and cut the beets and daikon in julienne strips, added a homemade mustard vinaigrette and chilled. I will have to post the recipe separately. It was very good!

Week 7: Athena melon, romano beans, red leaf lettuce, zucchini squash, basil, NJ tomatoes, scallions, corn, carrots, cucumber

Recipes: grilled zucchini, zucchini fritters, basil + tomato stacks, smoothies and salads

Our own garden is producing some pretty amazing results this month as well. I mean, look at it, it’s so beautiful! I posted a couple weeks ago for all of our local friends to come on buy and pick up some goodies. Every friend I visit these days gets some goodies from the garden. Lucky!

We picked almost 30 zucchini over the course of 2 weeks!

Our basil was absolutely stunning as well. I started giving lots away and also picking it for us to use. But really, who can use that much basil in one month? I decided to try a new method of preserving the basil this year. I picked a whole bunch of the leaves, divided them up between my large ice cube trays, filled with water and froze. The idea is that when I need to use it throughout the year, I’ll just grab a cube, leave it out to thaw, dry off and chop as usual. We shall see how this method works. I have frozen basil in past summers flat in a Ziploc bag, equally as easy.
